In the late 1980s, TMG, together with several partners, founded the Free TV station TELE 5 which became the Deutsches Sport Fernsehen after a change in the shareholder structure.
In 2002 TMG created a new national broadcaster and gave it the already widely recognized name TELE 5. After extending the station's transmission range, which now covers more than 90% of the territory, the station was successfully repositioned as a feature-film channel in September 2005.
Ever since its relaunch as a feature-film broadcaster, TELE 5 has become synonymous with cinema in all of its many facets. Its motto WIR LIEBEN KINO (We Love Movies) reflects the broadcaster's view and addresses all fans of feature films. Obligated to maintaining a high standard, TELE 5 reliably provides a glamorous mix of premiere broadcasts, highlights and classics of all genres. TELE 5 airs about 40 feature films every week. Original labels such as "Meisterwerke" (Masterpieces) and "5 Sterne Kino" (5 Star Cinema), "Meisterwerke Matinée" (Masterpiece Matinée) and "Frühstückskino" (Breakfast Cinema) set further accents and help the film lover navigate through the channel's varied offerings. In addition, there are also special programs for birthdays and anniversaries of stars, thematic film cycles and TV events such as the popular movie nights hosted by Thomas Gottschalk.
High-quality anime series and hit sci-fi series give young adults an attractive fictional slate on access prime time, which ensures an optimal audience flow into prime time.
A prominent representative of TELE 5's motto WIR LIEBEN KINO is Thomas Gottschalk. In his winning, whimsical manner, Germany's most popular TV entertainer reports from Hollywood every week about current cinematic topics in "Ich liebe Kino – Gottschalks Filmkolumne" (I Love Movies – Gottschalk's Film Column). He also regularly presents his personal favorites in the program slot "Mein Film des Monats" (My Film of the Month).
A look behind the scenes is provided by Christina Schulte, host of the in-house production "Wir lieben Kino – Das Magazin" (We Love Movies – The Magazine), and Bettina von Schimmelmann in her "insider" column "Hollywood Princess." These programs offer information on new film releases, candid interviews with the hottest stars, up-to-date reports about film premieres and festivals, and spotlights on the vibes and atmosphere of the world of film.
The success of the repositioning can already be seen in the channel's rapidly growing market shares. Since its relaunch in 2005, TELE 5 has more than doubled its market share from 0.4% to 1.0% among all viewers.
