HISTORY OF TELE MÜNCHEN GROUP

1970

  • The author and producer Walter Ulbrich establishes Tele München GmbH
  • Tele München produces well-known adventure classics such as "The Sea Wolf" and "The Lost Gold Of The Incas" for ZDF and other European broadcasters

1977

  • Dr. Herbert Kloiber acquires Tele München GmbH together with Fritz Buttenstedt
  • Dr. Herbert Kloiber founds Clasart with the view of producing classical music programming

1978

  • The Clasart production "Horowitz Live! – Horowitz plays Rachmaninoff" wins multiple Emmy® Awards

1979

  • The Clasart production "Elegies for the deaths of three Spanish poets" wins the International Emmy® Award for Performing Arts

1980

  • Tele München establishes Concorde Filmverleih

1981

  • Together with the exhibitor, Achim Flebbe, Tele München acquires cinemas in Hamburg, Braunschweig and Berlin

1985

  • Tele München becomes a shareholder of SAT1, the first private television broadcaster in Germany

1986

  • Tele München establishes the music broadcaster Musicbox together with Burda, Heinrich Bauer Verlag and Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung
  • Tele München becomes a shareholder in the private Munich-based local radio station Radio Xanadu (today Radio NRJ)

1987

  • Tele München sells 50% of Musicbox to Silvio Berlusconi's Fininvest. As a result, the broadcaster becomes the basis for the national, youth-oriented private broadcaster Tele 5

1988

  • The Axel Springer Verlag and CLT acquire an interest in Tele 5

1989

  • The US media company Capital Cities/ABC acquires a 50% stake in Tele München
  • Tele München takes over Vestron Video Deutschland with its program catalogue of more than 300 feature films and renames the new company Concorde Video (today Concorde Home Entertainment)

1991

  • Concorde Filmverleih celebrates a spectacular success with the title "Robin Hood: Prince Of Thieves" with close to five million admissions and gross box-office takings of DM 19.5 million
  •  Tele München sells its shares in Tele 5

1992

  • Tele München founds the private German broadcaster RTL II together with CLT, Bertelsmann and the Heinrich Bauer Verlag

1995

  • Tele München and Heinrich Bauer Verlag establish tm3, Germany’s first national TV broadcaster aimed at the female target group
  • Tele München founds Prisma Film for the purpose of producing TV shows and formats
  • Tele München together with the BBC (UK) and Toho Towa (Japan) forms a joint venture Mutual Film International based in Los Angeles with the objective of producing feature films

  • Dr. Herbert Kloiber re-acquires the 50% stake held by Capital Cities / ABC in Tele München
  • Tele München acquires the shares in tm3 from Heinrich Bauer Verlag

1997

  • Tele München acquires an interest in TV2, the first Hungarian national private TV channel

1998

  • Rupert Murdoch‘s News Corp. acquires a 66% stake in tm3

1999

  • tm3 acquires the German TV rights to the European Soccer Champions League
  • Tele München acquires an interest in the Scandinavian radio and TV broadcasting corporation SBS
  • EM.TV & Merchandising AG acquires an interest of 45% in Tele München
  • Tele München acquires 40% of shares in Austria's first private broadcasters ATV, RTV (Austria)

2000

  • Tele München acquires an interest in the US-based film studio Lionsgate
  • Tele München sells its remaining shares in tm3 to Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp

2001

  • With its innovative programs ("Big Brother", "Popstars"), RTL II becomes the most profitable "second generation" TV broadcaster in Germany

2002

  • ATV is awarded a contract for terrestrial expansion transforming it from a local to Austria's first private national TV broadcaster in Austria
  • Tele München launches a new private German free-to-air TV channel under the already established brand Tele 5

2003

  • Tele München's production "Rosenstrasse" is selected for the main competition of the 60th Venice Film Festival. Actress Katja Riemann is awarded the Volpi Cup for best actress
  • Tele München sells its shares in Lionsgate Entertainment

2004

  • Tele München closes an output agreement with the US film studio Warner Bros. and secures the TV rights to productions such as "Troy", "Harry Potter and the Goblet Of Fire, "The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers", etc.
  • Tele München re-acquires its 45% stake in EM.TV
  • Dr. Herbert Kloiber is awarded the Directorate Award of the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences during the International Emmy® Awards ceremony in New York

2005

  • Tele München sells its shares in SBS Broadcasting (Scandinavia)
  • Dr. Herbert Kloiber acquires a 49.66% stake in the exhibitor chain, CinemaxX AG

2006

  • Tele München and the US-based Warner Bros. extend their output agreement

2007

  • Dr. Herbert Kloiber is named honorary professor at the Hochschule für Fernsehen und Film (HFF) in Munich, at the same time becoming head of "Production and Media Studies”
  • Tele München and the On Demand Group (UK) form a joint venture On Demand Deutschland with the aim to distribute new digital TV content in German-speaking countries
  • "The Barber of Seville" becomes the first performance to be broadcast live by Clasart Classic from the Metropolitan Opera in New York to German cinemas

2008

  • Tele München founds the company TM International for the purpose of distributing film and TV productions worldwide

 

 

2009

  • Concorde Filmverleih heads cinema charts with "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn"

 

 

2010

  • Concorde Filmverleih becomes the most successful independent distributor in Germany.

2011

  • Concorde Filmverleih maintains its position as the most successful independent distributorin Germany
  • Tele München acquires a more than 40% interest in the film and television production company Odeon Film AG

2012

  • Tele München closes a multi-year output agreement with the US film studio MGM, and as a result it secures the TV rights to all James Bond feature films for the German-speaking territories
  • Dr. Herbert Kloiber sells his shares in CinemaxX AG to the British exhibitor Vue Entertainment
  • Herbert L. Kloiber is appointed Managing Director of Tele München Group

2013

  • Dr. Herbert Kloiber is awarded the prestigious Brandon Tartikoff Legacy Award
  • The Clasart Classic production "Bruckner Symphony No. 4" with the Cleveland Orchestra led by the conductor Franz Welser-Möst is honored as the "Bruckner recording of the year"

2014

  • Dr. Herbert Kloiber is named Knight in the National Order of the Legion of Honor by the President of the French Republic for his commitment to Franco-German relations
  • Tele München and Lionsgate Entertainment close an output agreement including titles such as "Divergent", "The Last Witch Hunter" and "Now You See Me 2"
  • Dr. Herbert Kloiber receives the MIPTV Medal of Honor for his contribution to the development of the international television market

2015

  • For the tenth season running, Clasart Classic is broadcast live from the Metropolitan Opera in New York to some 190 cinemas in Germany and Austria
